Scarcelli’s classic cars will be part of Show & Shine Saturday
It began with a 1964 Chevy Impala that was sitting on the lot at Ken Taylor Motors nearly 50 years ago.
“When I saw it I liked it and I bought it,” said John Scarcelli, who was in his mid-20s at the time. It kick-started a passion for automobiles that now extends to his grandson.
At the time, Scarcelli’s Impala was the envy of many in town.
“I think everyone wanted it when it was sitting in the lot before it got bought,” said Don Hawker, one of the organizers of the Show & Shine.
Scarcelli has kept his car in immaculate condition for nearly 50 years. He’s also passed on his passion to his family. He bought his son John Jr. his first truck when he was 16 – a 1949 Ford Pick-up that they rebuilt together.
That started John Jr. down the road. in 1977 he bought himself a 1957 Chevy pick-up. He later added a 1969 Camaro to his collection but his biggest project was a Corvette he salvaged over the course of three years. Make that two Corvettes combined to make one – complete with a racing suspension and flames painted on it.
Derek is the latest generation of Scarcelli car lovers, though his passion is trucks.
“I tried cars but I’m a truck guy,” said the owner of East End Autobody.
So far he fixed up a 1983 Chevy Silverado and he’s working on building a 1973 two-wheel drive Chevy Blazer.
“It’s all I like to do. I like working on them, I like driving them,” he said. “There’s something about finishing a project and hearing people’s compliments.”
The Scarcellis will be among the estimated 200 classic cars that will be on display during the Revelstoke Vintage Car Club Show & Shine this Saturday in downtown Revelstoke. On top of the cars there will also be a DJ in Grizzly Plaza from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m., bands from 1-4 p.m., a 50/50 draw, poker walk, raffle and facepainting for kids. There are also 18 trophies to be given out for different classes of vehicles.
At night, there’s an oldies-themed dance hosted by Team Gloria at the community centre.
