From books to board games at Vernon library

The Okanagan Regional Library branches have a wide variety of events for all ages

The Vernon library is the place to go to pick up the latest from Nobel-winner Alice Munro or to catch up on fall fashions in Vogue magazine.

But it’s also home to a wide range of activities for readers of all ages.

This coming year the Vernon Adult Book Club will explore a range of award-winning, books that span the genres.

The titles selected for 2014 include everything from historical fiction, memoir and science fiction, to social anthropology.

“There is a particular focus on Canadian writers. Nine of the 11 titles are Canadian and five of the authors are from B.C.,” said Kristy Hennings, Vernon library reference librarian and book club facilitator.

The 2014 titles include works such as The Book of Negroes by Lawrence Hill, Oryx and Crake by Margaret Atwood and John Steinbeck’s classic, The Grapes of Wrath.

The library invites you to use its space to meet with friends and play your favourite board games.

Veteran gamer and librarian James Stuart will be on-hand to moderate and play everything from From Settlers of Catan to historical war gaming.

“Bring your games, bring your opponents or come alone and meet others who share your hobby,” Stuart.

Lengthier games can be stowed away and picked up again the following session. The librarian will bring Mage War, for fans of this board game.

Three board-game sessions are scheduled upstairs at the library at 6 p.m. Nov. 14 and Dec. 12.

The Vernon library invites you to join an ongoing campaign of mystery and horror.

A traditional pencil and paper role-playing night will be hosted once a month at the library. Travel back to the 1920s and join a team of globe- travelling investigators and attempt to unravel a complex and ominous mystery. No experience with role-playing necessary.

Two sessions are planned in the upstairs community room Nov. 28.
