Roller derby is a full contact sport full of positional – or booty – blocking, ride outs and hip whips

The Rink Minx roller derby team has re-located to Campbell River and is looking for new members.

The team, which is comprised of Campbell River and Comox Valley skaters, lost its practice warehouse in Courtenay and took the opportunity to move north after securing practice space at the Campbell River Community Centre, and most recently, at Strathcona Gardens.

Rink Minx skater Lindsey Ryzak, aka Lita Riot, says the group is looking for members, with or without previous experience, who love to roller skate.

“We’re basically looking for anyone that wants to skate,” says Ryzak. “Right now we have about eight or nine ladies in the program right now and they’ve been doing really well. Some have a sports background and some don’t. It’s not necessary to have any skating experience as we teach you everything you need to know.”

Roller derby is a full contact sport full of positional – or booty – blocking, ride outs and hip whips. Each skater must wear full gear including a helmet, mouth and wrist guards, knee pads, elbow pads and roller skates.

“We are always looking for new players, it’s a great sport and we want everyone to have a chance at experiencing it,” Ryzak says. “Even if you’re not up for skating we have spots for volunteers, and non-skating officials.”

The Rink Minx host beginner classes on Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. at Strathcona Gardens and practices for advanced skaters are Sundays at 4:30 p.m. at the Community Centre. Anyone interested can contact Lindsey Ryzak at 250-850-4936 or email, rinkminxrollergirls@gmail.com.
