Learn how to record music

Introduction to recording, producing and mixing music on your own home computer using free programs.

This weekend, youth who are interested in making music can get a crash course in computer recording.

“Let’s Record Music” is a new program that will be held at recreation centers across Vancouver Island and the Gulf Islands, including the Frank Jameson Community Centre in Ladysmith.

The program is the brainchild of Eli Hason, a sound designer/DJ/recording engineer who relocated to Denman Island after years of working in Montreal and Los Angeles in the  video game and entertainment industry.

“The program is designed to get youth, and the young at heart,  introduced to creating and recording music on computers with free software,” he said in a press release.

An initial one-day course called “Introduction to Computer Recording” is being offered Sunday, Feb. 1 from 9:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The course is described as an introduction to recording, producing and mixing music on your own home computer using free programs.  It will cover the basics of instrument recording, microphones, and beat making.

The $80 cost of the course includes a basic USB audio interface and CDs full of samples and programs that are free to share online.

Hanson is also known as DJ Eliazar, and he tours Canada and the rest of the world, with regular Speakeasy Electro Swing nights happening in 15 cities in eight countries. He is also playing for Cirque Du Soleil in Seattle just days before the initial class at the Frank Jameson Community Center.
