MacKenzie Camp Society is renewed with energy

The camp is looking ahead to its 2014 summer season with several fundraising events planned

Editor’s note: The following is from the MacKenzie Camp Society.

MacKenzie Camp is launching its 2014 season with renewed energy.

At our recent board meeting several people indicated that they were willing to “step up to the plate” to serve on the board and on various committees. Our AGM with election of officers will take place Feb. 8 at St. Andrew’s United church, beginning with a thank you dinner for our sponsors at 5:30 p.m., followed by the election of officers and a review of our bylaws.

The board is also excited to be hosting a Fundraising Dinner and Auction Feb. 22 at 5:30 p.m., at the Enderby Seniors Centre. All tickets which were purchased for the earlier event will be honoured. Tickets are only $10 and available at the Enderby & District Chamber of Commerce office, Tonyo’s Outfitter and your local United Church. Phone to reserve a ticket at 250-838 6293, or a few tickets will be available at the door. All proceeds will go to complete the flooring in the Alice Large Dorm and to the Campership Fund.

Our own award-winning artist, Jaime Seward, is donating a print which will be up for auction, as is artist Sharon Wickstrom, together with other original paintings, baking, beautiful gift ideas and entertainment. We will need more items for the auction. Call 250-838-6293 to have items picked up, or they can be dropped off at St. Andrew’s United Church/ or at the Seniors’ Centre Feb. 22  before 3 p.m.  All merchants who donate items will be recognized.

MacKenzie Camp has been serving children in this area as a summer camp for 66 years, offering young people an opportunity to live in balance with nature, learn new skills and come home with friendships that last a lifetime.

The camp welcomed almost 200 campers this past summer, employed 14 young people, provided leadership training for 22 future leaders, and hosted a number of events and retreats in the fall. Every child who applies is welcomed, with the camp sponsoring 72 children this year through our campership program.

With the help of many local organizations and churches, $20,000 was raised for this program, with numerous children sponsored through our school program.

The vision of the camp is that “all are accepted as unique, important and capable. We endeavor to inspire campers through relationships, nature and spirituality to grow and have fun.” We take very seriously our environmental responsibility in all our actions and decisions, and try hard to live in accord with nature.
