Marking a milestone

Betty Warden celebrates her 101st birthday at Amenida senior's community in Surrey.

The residents at Amenida seniors’ community in Surrey helped celebrate a milestone birthday Friday afternoon.

Resident Betty Warden officially turned 101.

Born Jan. 7, 1911 in England, Warden, the youngest of five girls, was married in 1933.

During the war, while her husband was away at sea, Warden worked as a shell inspector at an ammunition plant. In 1957, she and her husband Alf moved to North Delta with their six children.

In 1971 warden retired from Woodwards department store in order to spend more time with her granddaughter.

Following the death of her husband after 63 years of marriage, Warden began volunteering at St. Michael’s Centre care home in Burnaby until finally retiring at 98 years old.

She has been a member of the Royal Purple of Canada, a national charitable organization for 52 years.

Having moved to Amenida in October 2011, Warden has found a new place to call home, where she says she loves the food, the staff and the companionship.
