Most people know that honeybees are tireless workers who provide us with honey, but did you know that they are also responsible for pollinating one third of all crops we eat?
John Gates, one of Western Canada’s most respected beekeepers, will give a presentation at the Greater Vernon Museum & Archives on Saturday from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Topics include honeybees, what they do and how and why they do it; how essential they are for modern food production; basic beekeeping; and current worldwide problems with bee health.
Gates began beekeeping in 1974. A year later he was hired by the BC Ministry of Agriculture’s beekeeping program where he worked until retiring as provincial beekeeping specialist in 2002. He has lectured on honeybees in Canada, the United States and New Zealand. Gates has owned and operated Gates Bee Farm, a bee breeding, pollinating and honey production business in Spallumcheen, since 2002.
