As part of B.C. Association of Farmers’ Markets (BCAFM) celebration of Farmers Appreciation Week (Sept. 12 – 19), the public was asked to submit entries for the third annual Ode to a Farmer poetry contest.
The criteria was any subject that demonstrated their appreciation for B.C. farmers.
One of three accomplished B.C. writers were asked to judge the 120 entries.
“This year’s crop of poems, from across B.C., revealed a depth of insight into the world of farming and the people who work the land,” author and
judge Renee Sarojini Saklikar said.
Poems ranged in topic from farmers to migrant workers, from the love a wife has for her partner, to food poems about fruits, vegetables and animals.
Kudos to BC Farmers’
Markets for encouraging people to write about their passion for this place they call home.”
Locally, Bev Gentles won the Cariboo Chilcotin regional prize of $50 in market bucks for her poem Green is My Garden.
Taylor Theodore of Langley won the grand prize of $150 market bucks to the farmers’ market of her choice, for her poem Ode to a Farmer, From his Love.
The BCAFM is a not-for-profit association that represents 125 farmers’ markets across the province and works to support, develop and promote farmers’ markets in all regions of B.C.
