A fundraiser on Saturday, June 27, including a poker rally, burger, beer, silent auction and prizes will benefit the Mill Bay Marine Rescue Society.
It all begins at the Cobblestone Pub at 4 p.m., when participants can purchase tickets and meet their local marine search and rescue team.
Those who choose to take part in the hike can then head to the top of Cobble Hill Mountain, where they will receive three poker cards. The best hands will be determined at the pub later on, Texas Hold ‘Em style.
Upon returning to the pub, hikers will meet up with everyone else for dinner, door prizes
and poker rally prizes will be handed out, and the silent auction will take place.
Tickets for the event are $20 and include the poker rally, a burger and a beer.
The RCM-SAR Unit 34 Marine Rescue Society is a non-profit organization made up of local community members who volunteer their time and efforts towards the safety of all boaters who use Maple Bay, Sansum Narrows, Cowichan Bay, the Saanich Inlet and connected waterways.
As members of the Royal Canadian Marine Search and Rescue (formerly the Canadian Coast Guard Auxiliary-Pacific) they carry pagers 24 hours a day and are tasked with various missions, including towing boats with engine failure, night marine missing person searches, boat fires and medical emergencies.
Committed to the community, RCM-SAR Unit No. 34 takes great pride in being able to offer marine search and rescue services to participate in such events as the Cowichan Bay Boat Festival, Maple Bay Sail-past, Brentwood College regatta and other local public interest causes.
They also try to raise public awareness of boating safety, education and equipment.
