Vernon Silver Star Quilters is a diverse group of women, (and one guy) coming from all parts of the world, with a common interest in quilting and fabric.

The guild’s main focus is to promote quilting through literature, workshops, seminars, demonstrations and quilt shows. Meetings are a great time to catch up with friends, make new friends and learn new things. The guild meets twice a month on the first and third Thursday mornings. Besides business and announcements, we all enjoy workshops, trunk shows, demonstrations, and especially our regular show and tell.

The guild also offers guest speakers/teachers, and two retreats a year. We have a library with a great selection of quilting books, patterns, rulers and magazines, all of which may be borrowed. There are also social days, road trips, pot lucks and several subgroups.

Every third year the guild hosts their tri-ennual quilt show (undoubtedly one of the biggest and best around),  and VSSQ members — more than 130 of them — have been very busy this year preparing for their Legacy of Quilts V111 Show. This show-stopper features more than 250 quilts on display, as well as a tea room ($3 per person), a merchants’ mall, a raffle for amazing quilts, demos, and a gift shop.

Funds raised from this tri-ennual event are used for providing materials for quilts which are donated to a number of community services. In the past three years, hundreds of quilts were gifted to organizations that work with marginalized children, victims of fire, crime and accidents, disaster relief  and preemies in hospitals. Funds are also donated to charities as their need is dictated, and the remainder covers operational overhead for the next three years.

This year’s show runs today from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. and Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the Vernon Recreation Centre. Everyone is welcome and note: husbands get in for free! For everyone else, admission is $6. Be inspired, while supporting local charities!
