On Tuesday, Oct. 11, over 40 people attended an informative luncheon organized by Wells Gray Country Seniors Society.
Gerda Faber, a nurse working in the field of diabetes for the last 12 years and Ashley Jacobs, a fourth year nursing student gave an excellent presentation explaining the many aspects of type one and type two diabetes.
Faber used simple language, a couple of catchy songs and memorable images to explain how the pancreas squirts out insulin that opens the cell wall doors to admit sugars that give us energy. She talked about how the blood gets sticky and the cell wall doors do not open very well when the pancreas gets overused causing too much sugar to stay in the blood.
Dealing with diabetes and helping to control the occurrence of diabetes comes down to life style choices. She discussed the importance of eating a healthy diet and regular meals. She talked about regular exercise and working with your doctor to check your blood sugar levels.
Faber reminded the participants of the Health Hotline (811) where they can get personal health questions answered.
This monthly luncheon and speaker series is supported with a grant from the United Way. The next luncheon will be on Tuesday Nov. 8. You can call Lynne Frizzle at 250 674 8185 for further details.
