Even before the doors opened at the SHOAL Centre in Sidney, people were lined up to get information on mobility issues on the Saanich Peninsula.
Saturday, June 4 was Access Awareness Day in the community and began with a scooter rodeo at Sidney All Care. It was a chance for experienced and new scooter users to get some pointers and a refresher on the rules of the road. Resident Hugh Peters says he came out to have fun on his scooter.
“It works well,” he said. “I use it to do all my shopping when I go out.”
He said his family has lived in Sidney for years and even in a scooter, he is able to navigate the streets quite well while riding. Peters joined other residents and local politicians in a scooter parade into the downtown, returning to the SHOAL Centre for a day of mobility information and activities.
The Town of Sidney also presented this year’s Jeannette Hughes Award to the local White Cane Club, which works on behalf of people with limited or no vision.
