We are well into July and still we have had no really hot weather. Some places it’s too hot or flooding. We have a very heavy hay crop but so far no drying weather. Maybe there will be a turn and a break for the ranchers.
Lots of big travel trailers both coming and going, a good sign. Some of the big rigs look like a moving home on wheels, they are beautiful, as I say a home away from home. The bad weather doesn’t seem to effect the fishing it has been great, both Char and Trout. Folks have been casting off the shore and catching a limit.
On Wednesday last at the Immaculate Church many many loving close family and friends gathered to pay their last respects to Marlene Feldman, such a lovely person so well known and respected by all who had the pleasure of knowing her. Marlene and her husband Derek were always there in the Lakes District to help and sometimes take over the management. Such as the Fall Fair, rodeo assn., and many more helping out at all times. By the numbers who were present at her service told us all just how well Marlene was thought of and loved. She is leaving behind such a loving family and so many friends, yes Marlene we will all miss you so much.
When we lose anyone in our community I always feel like it’s part of my family that has gone. When I am all alone in my room where I do my write ups for the paper and of late we seem to have so many friends that have left us, folks that I have known and loved so much. In my over 70 years it seems there are so many. Especially some one as young as Marlene, I ask the question why? I am not ashamed to say that when I am alone I cry a little bit as it makes me feel a little better.
On July 8, 2011 there was a funeral service at the church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints for the late Alice Price. Officiant Pastor Elmer Mushumanksi. Who took the service. Alice also leaves her loving family and so many friends. She was one great lady. She was an active member of the Women’s Institute and many of the Christmas dinners were held in her home. Alice and my late wife Jo were very good friends and always attended the meetings together. Interment was in the Tatalrose cemetery. Alice and her husband Mel ranched in the Tatalrose district for many years also raised their family there. In later years they made their home at Tchesinkut Lake, where they spent the rest of their lives. This is another break in one of our old time pioneer families. I will miss this couple of very good friends that we go back so many years and always enjoyed our visits. I know their families will carry on their good name and be very proud to be part of such a great heritage the coming years.
A short while ago I sent in my news column a little poem I had written. It was about a big old eagle who was watching some little ducks hoping to get his breakfast. As it turned out he was very lucky and did get the little duck. Last week I received such a nice letter from Paula Laurie the grade 4/5 teacher at the William Konkin Elementary School. Her class have been practicing a strategy called “Sketch, Label and Summarize.” They used my poem for this. I felt it was a honour and I did appreciate hearing from her. She also enclosed her pupils summaries and the message that they found in my poem I have read all of them and it’s very heart warming to see each ones perspective. It’s very interesting to read each one’s. Thank you again Mrs. Laurie for sending me these papers from your class as I will keep them all in my treasures.
The mail is once more moving, very slow I must admit but it’s moving. This so called layover, I wonder if it will improve the service. Canada Post seems to be more confusing as time goes on. Now we are looking for cutbacks in the postal service, trying to make the service better but instead of getting better it’s going backwards. Yesterday I received a Christmas card in the mail from my cousin in the old country dated Nov. 19, 2010. I had been wondering why I had not heard from her. When I see the new modern way they sort the mail, I just wonder why more mail doesn’t get lost in the shuffle.
It was very warming on July 10 when our family gathered at the Burns Lake Cemetery to remember my late wife’s birthday. Lots of wonderful memories of the families growing up years, lots of tears too but also the fun times we all had, during those years Jo was a good mother and a good friend to the family. She always seemed to be there to help and understand their problems. She has left a great heritage that will be remembered forever. Not only remembered but also lived.
A little story
A chemistry teacher was teaching his class of the fifth grade the evils of liquor. So he went on to explain to the class. He produced a glass of water and a glass of whiskey. So he put a worm in the glass of water and a worm in the glass of whiskey. The worm in the glass of water was very happy, the worm in the glass of whiskey died. Now did you get the message of what whiskey can do. A boy held up his hand and said “If you drink whiskey you won’t get worms.”
Take care and have a happy and safe holiday and always remember God loves you and so do I.
