Unique facility opens to public

Centre for Active Living an innovative, multi-purpose health resource

As if sunny beaches, world-class shopping and a burgeoning arts scene weren’t enough to make the Semiahmoo Peninsula a sought-after destination, a brand-new, innovative facility has thrust our community onto the world stage.

It’s called the Centre for Active Living, located beside Centennial Arena, and is designed to focus on prevention and management of chronic disease through fitness and recovery programs.

The centre is the product of a unique partnership between the Peace Arch Hospital and Community Health Foundation, Fraser Health, The City of White Rock, Peace Arch Curling Centre, White Rock South Surrey Community Foundation, the Province of British Columbia and the Government of Canada, who, along with the generous support of Peninsula community members, banded together to create what is described as a “fabulous resource for the community.”

Comprised of a brand new curling rink and two state-of-the-art fitness studios, there will be plenty of opportunity for Peninsula residents to get their daily doses of exercise at the Centre for Active Living, where a variety of fitness programs are offered by White Rock Leisure Services.

For patients dealing with chronic disease or recovering from cardiac disease, the centre is home to Fraser Health’s Cardiac Rehabilitation Program, which offers education and fitness programs.

Later this year, a Primary Care Access Clinic will also be moving into the Centre for Active Living, which will connect patients with family doctors in the community and provide enhanced care for high-need patients or those suffering from chronic disease.

The White Rock South Surrey Stroke Recovery Club and the Alzheimer’s Society of B.C. White Rock Resource Centre are also looking forward to setting up their new digs in the centre.

Besides providing a plethora of health benefits to the White Rock / South Surrey community, the Centre for Active Living is also attracting the attention of the World Health Organization (WHO), who is keeping a close eye on the centre’s common-sense, multi-faceted approach to health living.

Though there are many aspects to the idea behind the centre, the overall concept is a relatively simple one: exercise, diet and lifestyle are the three most important factors to a person’s overall health.

Access to such a cutting-edge and forward-thinking facility right here on the Semiahmoo Peninsula is hoped to encourage long, health lives for all the residents in this community.
