Using up that extra second can change a life

Paula Lambert shares some ideas for taking on life-changing challenges with the extra second this year

What will you do with your extra second this year?

What will you do with your extra second this year?

Like most of you, I’m always in a time crunch. There never seems to be enough hours, minutes, seconds in the day to fit in the endless list of things that need to be done.

Finding that mythical thing called life-work balance seems like a near impossibility for most of us.

Well, on July 6, the folks at the US Naval Observatory made an announcement that has given us a little hope. On Dec. 31, at 6:59:59 p.m., we have an additional second to spend however we please.

I’ve given this a great deal of thought, probably much more than that little second deserves, but I personally think that little snippet of extra life merits some serious consideration.

When I think about how much of my time gets wasted doing mundane things like sleeping, laundry and shaving my legs, it makes me think about the fun things I’d rather be doing.

Have you ever done something really life-changing? Have you jumped from a plane? Participated in a worldwide scavenger hunt like GISHWHES (Greatest Internet Scavenger Hunt The World Has Ever Seen)? Swum with dolphins? Built a shelter for the homeless? Run through the sprinkler like a hooligan? Or even just told someone how beautiful their smile is or how much their presence means in your life?

It doesn’t actually take much more than a second to change a life — yours or someone else’s — I think that’s what I’ll do with my extra allotment. How about you? What will you do with yours?
