Vernon students create heritage stamps

Students put their stamp on heritage with a contest sponsored by the North Okanagan Optimist Club

In the coming months Canada Post will bring out the last of their World Heritage Site stamps for 2017.

More than 90 Vernon students are ahead of them, creating Canadian heritage stamps to launch the Vernon and District/North Okanagan Optimist Club’s Heritage Fair for 2017.

Students chose a topic from Canadian history, which could be historical, a sports personality, an explanation of a Canadian icon or a family member’s story. The options were numerous. They then researched the topic, wrote a paragraph on why their theme is important to them and created their stamps to illustrate the theme.

The Heritage Fair steering committee then had the difficult task of choosing the top six entries. This year there is a wonderful range of students from Grade 3 to Grade 7 included in the winners. One of the entries was also chosen to have their stamp used on the T-shirts for all of the students who will participate in the 2017 Heritage Fair.

The six finalists are Ashley Hopkins from Okanagan Landing elementary school, Gray-C McLean from Harwood elementary, Sophia Bilodeau from Coldstream elementary, Jasmine Soon from Kidston elementary and Maggie Wiltse and Adriana Brown from Lavington elementary. All of the top six will receive a cheque for $50 and Gray-C will have her stamp used on the T-shirts.

The 2017 Heritage Fair will be held April 7 at the Schubert Centre. The fair is open to the public from 6:30 until 7:30 p.m., with the awards ceremony to follow.  Last year we were proud to send 26 of our students to the regional fair in Kelowna.

Thank you to the North Okanagan Optimist Club for their sponsorship and support.
