James Miller, the founder of a website called End Youth Violence and often-quoted speaker on youth crime issues, was sentenced this morning (Friday) to 18 months in jail for sexually assaulting a pre-teen.
In October, a B.C. Supreme Court Judge found Miller guilty on three charges of molesting an 11-year-old boy, including sexual assault, sexual interference of a person under 14 and sexual exploitation. The charges stem back to four incidents, two in 2001 and two in 2005.
At the time of conviction last fall, Justice Bruce Josephson said the male victim, now 19 years old, was a “powerful and credible witness,” whereas Miller’s explanations made no sense and were “approaching the bizarre.”
Miller must also serve two years probation following his prison term.
A court order forbids publishing any information that would identify the victim.
The investigation into the complaint began before Miller ran as an independent candidate for Newton-North Delta in the 2008 federal election using the name James Miller-Cousineau. At the time, he said the allegations were unfounded.
