People in the Cowichan Valley are still speeding through school zones.
On June 1, North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP conducted speed enforcement in several school zones in the Cowichan Valley and caught 39 people violating the limits.
Throughout their shift, while primarily responding to regular calls for service, the officers also made patrols through the school zones within the policing area to ensure the safety of those students who returned to school this week for in-class instruction.
Between 8 a.m. and 5 p.m., 39 warning tickets were issued for speeding in a school zone. While enforcing the speed, officers also issued two other violation tickets, located a prohibited driver and a vehicle without insurance.
“The officers used their discretion by issuing warnings, this could have easily been 39 violation tickets,” says Const. Pam Bolton of the North Cowichan/Duncan RCMP. “Please use caution while travelling through school zones.”
The school zones remain in effect until the end of the school year. Fines for speeding in a school zones range from $196 to $253. If speed is in excess of 40km/hr over the posted limit, fines range from $368 to $483.
