A long, bold ride for an Errington friend

Roxanne Adams of Errington has logged hundreds of kilometres cycling up and down the Island Highway, as well as at spinning class, all in preparation for a bold riding journey taking place this weekend.

Adams is taking part in the Ride to Conquer Cancer June 14-15 and she is bringing along her girlfriend Patti Whittaker, who is battling the disease.

“I am riding to help in the fight against cancer and support my family and friends, especially my long time friend Patti,” explained Adams.

Adams has raised about $3,500 so far and her team iConquer has generated $24,000 which will go towards groundbreaking cancer research at the BC Cancer Agency.

Since its inception in 2009, the Ride to Conquer Cancer has raised $50 million in support of cancer research that is focused on advancing new understandings of cancer for the development of improved treatment options.

Last year, 2,642 cyclists participated in the two-day cycling event from Vancouver to Seattle and raised $10.4 million.

Adams has been training for the ride since January.

She rides a few times a week on her mountain bike and has peddled her road bike to Campbell River and back several times.

She is not new to the event.  She participated in 2012 and said it was an unforgettable experience.

“It was so positive.  It is a totally supported ride and the energy of the people along the way is amazing.  The cancer survivors who take part have a yellow flag on their bikes.”

Whittaker who will be in one of the support vehicles for the event said she is delighted to be participating.

“I am really excited about being a part of it.  I will be in a vehicle to help with things like flat tires and injuries but hopefully there will be none of the above.” To donate to someone taking part in the Ride to Conquer Cancer, visit www.conquercancer.ca or call 1.888.771.BIKE (2453).
