Council’s first meeting of 2019 is set for Monday, Jan. 14. at 7 p.m.
Top of the agenda to start the year are requests for early approval of capital projects. But because Oak Bay won’t have a finalized budget until July, council can vote to pre-approve certain items that are on the horizon.
The biggest ticket is $600,000 dollars for pavement management. The provisional budget included in the amended five-year financial plan calls for a total of $700,000. Debbie Carter, Oak Bay director of financial services, said $600,000 was the chosen number for early approval because it’s what taxpayers paid last year. According to her report to council regarding the early approval items, pavement management is funded by property taxes.

In all, Carter’s report recommends council pre-approve a little more than $1.3 million in capital projects. The provisional budget estimates total 2019 expenditures will be more than $46 million.
Other notable items include Oak Bay officially seeking a Union of BC Municipalities Community Child Care Planning Program grant alongside Saanich, and Mayor Kevin Murdoch sponsored a motion that would see staff table a report on the possible extension of the 10-day mail-in ballot period.
