It was a weekend of wins and losses for the Nakusp Bantam Falcons and the North Kootenay Midget Falcons at the Nakusp and District Arena.
The Bantam Falcons went up against Greater Trail on Oct. 22, the first time the two teams have faced off since the beginning of the season.
It was a hard fought game. Both teams had strong players, and there was a constant back and forth as each team tried their hardest for a goal. With just over a minute left in the period, Greater Trail scored.
There was a scary moment in the second period, as the Falcons’ Kimberly Roberts tripped and fell head first into the boards, but was quick to get back up, though she spent the rest of the period on the bench.
“She said she had a little bit of a headache, and with the new concussion rules, we’re not allowed to let her play, and she has to have a break,” said Wayne Hascarl, head coach for the Bantam team.
By the end of the second period, the score was 4-0 for Greater Trail.
Things started to look up for the Falcons in the third and final period of the game. Six minutes in, the team scored their first goal, eliciting loud cheers from residents who came to support the team.
Unfortunately, it would be their only goal of the game. Greater Trail won with a score of 5-1.
Despite the ending to the game, Hascarl wasn’t going to let one loss deter the team before their game on Oct. 23 against the Nelson Leafs.
“We’ve got to play hard, that’s all there is to it.”
Play hard they did, though there was some worry this game would be a repeat of Saturday’s match, as the Leafs scored exactly one and a half minutes into the first period.
Try as they might, the Falcons couldn’t seem to get the puck into the net.
That all changed in the second period.
Team captain Isaac Flamand scored the team’s first goal of the game two and a half minutes into the period. The euphoria was short lived as the Leafs scored thirty seconds later.
Not to be deterred, the Falcons scored another goal. By the end of the second period the score was 5-2 for the Falcons.
But by the end of the game the Falcons had pulled ahead, winning 9-3.
“They passed the puck better and played their positions better, and that creates goals,” said Hascarl.
The Bantam Falcons will face off against Grand Forks at the arena this coming weekend.
The North Kootenay Midget Falcons lost their game against Castlegar 8-3.
