The Abbotsford Heat Foundation is preparing to choose its 2013 grant recipients.

The foundation has issued an invitation to all organizations that have programs that fall within the guidelines to apply for a grant. The deadline is May 10.

“We granted to about 15 different people last year and have covered a lot of the Fraser Valley, but we’re hoping to catch a few more applications,” explained Judy Sweeting, chair of the foundation.

Recipients last year included organizations like Cyrus Centre, Matthew’s House and Abbotsford Restorative Justice. The grants ranged from $2,000 to $5,000.

Funds are raised locally by the foundation.

“We hold a golf tournament each year and we have six 50/50 nights that we can choose,” said Sweeting.

The 50/50 draws occur during each home game of the Abbotsford Heat hockey squad.

The Calgary Flames also donate money to the foundation. Sweeting said any group with a charity number can apply for a grant.

“But our pillars are for improving the lives of children under the age of 17.”

Helping children in the Fraser Valley is the key objective for the group.

The foundation does this by supporting grassroots sport organizations, championing projects that improve health, education and fitness, as well as advocating and supporting programs that repress risk-related behaviour.
