The Abbotsford Police Department (APD) is warning residents about an increase in break-ins in the Winfield Drive area over the past month.
Sgt. Judy Bird said that, since Oct. 20, Winfield Drive – located off Old Yale Road – has had nine break-ins, three of which took place last week.
She said the majority of these incidents took place in the evening or overnight, with the prowler(s) gaining access through unlocked doors or windows.
Sgt. Jason Scott of the crime prevention unit said it’s important to not make it easy for thieves.
“Take the time to make sure your doors and windows are locked, your blinds are closed and your outside lights are on,” he said.
Bird said the APD is continuing to remind citizens to get into the habit of practising the “9 p.m. Routine,” which includes locking up vehicles and residences before going to bed.
“Please be aware of strangers in your neighbourhood and report all suspicious activity, even minor incidents such as change stolen from a car overnight,” she said.
Bird said anyone who suspects their house has been broken into should immediately call police, not enter until they know their home is safe, and not touch anything indoors until police have investigated.
