Public school students in Abbotsford will get a two-week spring break next year.
The school board approved the schedule for the 2018/19 year at a public meeting Tuesday evening. The decision came after a scheduling dispute between the board and the local teachers’ union.
The Abbotsford District Teachers’ Association filed a grievance claiming the proposed school calendar violated their collective agreement. In response, school board chair Shirley Wilson claimed the district had no choice but to schedule a school calendar with a one-week spring break if the grievance were not resolved.
The district surveyed staff, teachers and parents and found that 87 per cent of respondents preferred a two-week break.
The 2019 spring break will run from march 18 to 29.
