The Abbotsford School District received a $5,000 award for its career programs, the second year in a row it has received the honour from the Industry Training Authority (ITA).
The award is given to top-performing districts with the largest numbers of students transitioning into the trades in various economic regions of the province.
In a report to the board of education, superintendent Kevin Godden noted that Abbotsford has the largest number of youths entering the trades in the entire province.
ITA representatives, including youth programs manager Jason Leber, attended a recent school board meeting to present the award, with ASD’s career programs helping teacher Rick McDonald and two former youth train in trades (YTIT) alumni in attendance.
One such student was Noah Janz, an ASIA Sumas 2018 graduate who completed his automotive service level one training through YTIT last year and is currently working an apprenticeship at Maple Ridge Hyundai.
The other student in attendance was Anthony Malatinka, a W. J. Mouat Secondary 2018 graduate, also a YTIT automotive service level one alum who is now working at Magnuson Ford in Abbotsford.
“These former grads are an example of youth from our schools who were trained in our ITA programs and have been successfully transitioned into our communities as skilled workers,” Godden wrote in his report.
