Abbotsford had the second-most number of COVID-19 cases in the Fraser Health region in 2020 after Surrey, according to the latest data released Thursday (Jan. 7) by the BC Centre for Disease Control.
The data indicates there were 3,377 confirmed cases in Abbotsford for all of 2020, representing 6.6 per cent of the province’s total 51,300 cases and a rate of almost 24 cases per 1,000 people.
That’s a jump of 1,540 cases from the previous month. Through to the end of November, there were 1,837 cases in Abbotsford.

Surrey (excluding South Surrey/White Rock) led the province with the most COVID-19 cases in 2020 – 16,109, representing 31 per cent of B.C.’s total and a rate of almost 33 cases per 1,000 people.
(The BCCDC data separates South Surrey/White Rock from the rest of Surrey. That area had a total of 1,131 cases in 2020.)
Following Surrey and Abbotsford for cases in the Fraser Health region in 2020 are Burnaby (3,077), Tri-Cities (2,204), Delta (1,960), Langley (1,807), Chilliwack (1,185), New Westminster (967), Maple Ridge/Pitt Meadows (885) and Mission (512).
Vancouver had 8,249 cases in 2020.

According to notes from the data, cases are mapped by location of residences, while cases “with unknown residence and from out of province are not mapped.”
It adds that the number of cases in each local health authority, “may not represent the location of exposure,” such as people who were infected while travelling or working elsewhere.
