Abbotsford youths take up climate strike

A group of mostly middle school students have been taking to the sidewalk outside city hall on Fridays

A handful of mostly middle school youths in Abbotsford are joining a global call to action, taking time out of class to protest inaction on a brewing climate crisis.

A worldwide student strike over climate policies took place on March 15, inspired by 16-year-old Greta Thunberg, including walk-outs throughout Canada and B.C.

Taking inspiration from that walkout, about 10 young activists in Abbotsford took to the sidewalk outside city hall, along South Fraser Way, on Friday with signs, shouting slogans in support of action on climate change.

Among the slogans, one youth was shouting “There’s no point in school if we don’t have a future” and “You know it’s time for change when children act like leaders and leaders act like children.”

Carly Calhoun was out supporting her children, and family friends, with students coming from Abbotsford Traditional Middle School, Abbotsford Middle School and ASIA Sumas Middle School. The action has been running for three weeks, now, with Friday the first day out on the sidewalk since spring break ended.

“We’re trying to it get bigger and bigger. I started a page and I invite my friends every week, because our kids don’t have Facebook,” Calhoun said.

The protests, which garnered several supportive honks this week, are running Fridays at 1 p.m.
