Activity centre proposed

Lake Country will seek $5 million Federal Gas Tax Fund to cover majority of $6 million project cost.

Lake Country council will be asked to endorse a $6 million recreation centre project that will include renovations to Winfield Arena and Seniors Centre at next Tuesday’s council meeting.

The municipality would pick up $1 million of the cost, the remainder covered by approval of a $5 million grant request to the Federal Gas Tax Fund.

The cost breakdown would be $2.5 million for he new multi-generational activity centre, $1 million for arena renovations, $500,000 for seniors’ centre renovations and $750,000 for site improvements.

The estimated project completion date is the fall of 2019.

The activity centre would provide a new permanent home for the Lake Country Boys and Girls Club, faced with the prospect of having to move from their current location, the Winfield elementary school property, which is now up for sale.

“The club needs a permanent location to both accommodate current programs and services, and allow for future growth,” stated a report to council submitted by Matt Vader, district manager of strategic and support services.

This other use factors of the facility will be to increase community space access overall, provide a place for complimentary activities and groups and enhance the existing program offerings of the current complex.

Changes to the seniors’ centre will address accessibility issues, upgrade worn and tired interior finishings and add space or new programs and services.

For the arena, renovations will target existing building code deficiencies such as significant accessibility to the upper floor public spaces and no handicapped washroom provisions.
