The construction of the Petro-Can gas station, a convenience store and a Tim Hortons restaurant on T’Sou-ke Nation land, near Edward Milne community school, received a welcome boost on Saturday when the federal government announced additional funding for the project.

The feds will spend $988,637 to finance the first phase of the project that will support the development of approximately six hectares of commercial enterprises, said Indigenous Services Minister Seamus O’Regan.

“The support from the CORP (Community Opportunity Readiness Program) fund was invaluable to T’Sou-ke Nation as it allowed for key infrastructure to be built and allowed us to focus on the commercial development aspects of the project,” said T’Sou-ke Nation Chief Gordon Planes.

The CORP funds were needed for site clearing, the construction of water distribution and storm sewer systems, road work, electrical work, and related inspections.

T’Sou-ke Nation anticipates the project will create 46 full-time and 32 part-time jobs, and six spin-off businesses in the Sooke Region.
