ADSS athletes step up for food drive

200 students, coaches and volunteers participate in annual athletic department food drive

Nearly 200 students, coaches and volunteers participated in the annual Alberni District Secondary School Athletic Department food drive on Wednesday, Dec. 7.

Students filled up six buses, while others walked on foot, and managed to cover most of the town in their door-to-door food drive.

“There were more than availability for buses,” said athletic director Mike Roberts.

Over the evening, students filled up the waiting Salvation Army food truck, then stopped by the school for hot dogs and hot chocolate.

This is the sixth year that the athletic department has organized the food drive, and the event has grown over the years. According to Roberts, this was the first year the school had some cars stopping by the school to drop off donations.

“Those are people who live in rural areas, whose houses we aren’t going to make it to,” he explained.

He also pointed out that this is the first year grade eights have gotten involved in the food drive.

“Now we’ve got some grade eights in the mix,” he said. “To come from elementary school to this…it’s quite the eye-opener for them.”
