Referendum officials say turnout was steady at the polling station Wednesday morning as voters in Castlegar and area decide on improvements to the local sports complex.
More than 200 people had shown up by about 1 p.m. for the first advanced poll on the $22 million borrowing plan.
“It’s been busy in fits and starts,” said Randy Matheson, the regional voting officer overseeing the ballots at the polling station in the Community Complex.
Voters are deciding on two bylaws with a simple yes/no answer: the first bylaw creates a single recreation service to oversee management of the facility (there are currently two), and gives that service taxation power; the second bylaw allows that service to borrow up to $22 million to fund major improvements to the facility.
To vote in the referendum, residents must be 18 years of age, Canadian citizens, residents of B.C. for six months, and have lived 30 days in the Castlegar and district voting areas.
This was the first day of advance polling; the next is Wednesday, June 20. The actual referendum day is on Saturday, June 23.
