Want to get to know your local police officers a little better?
On Wednesday, Aug. 7, the Agassiz RCMP are inviting all members of the public to stop by Heritage House Café for their first coffee with a cop event.
According to Sgt. Darren Rennie, the idea was introduced to the detachment by Chilliwack RCMP member Cpl. Mike Rail.
“They took a couple of young constables and threw them into a coffee shop in Chilliwack,” Rennie said. “And the people that showed up … they really enjoyed just having a sit down conversation with the officers.”
The success of that event spurred another in Chilliwack the following year, and now Agassiz is coming on board.

“You can see that basically the cops are real people. They have families, they go home at the end of the day and they play with their own kids,” Rennie said about the event. “It’s just gives a different perspective I think.”
On Aug. 7, three members from the Agassiz detachment will be on hand to answer questions: Const. Ryan Tucker, new to the detachment; Cpl. David Skretting and Rennie.
Rennie isn’t sure how many people will come out to Agassiz’s first event, but expects it to be a popular one.
“Everyone is very supportive of the police officers,” he said. “You go out for a walk and you’ll be stuck talking to people for 45 minutes to an hour because everyone wants to see what’s going on.
“It’s always a very positive interaction, so I suspect it will go over very well here.”
Coffee with a cop will be at Heritage House in downtown Agassiz (7216 Pioneer Ave) from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 7.
