Agassiz RCMP warn residents after week of break and enters

RCMP are asking community members to remove garage door openers from their vehicles

Agassiz RCMP are warning residents to keep their vehicles and garages locked after a “baker’s dozen” of break and enters hit the community this week.

According to Cpl. Fred Ritchie, the police department has received nine reports of break and enters in Agassiz over the last four days. This doesn’t include a spat of break and enters from early Friday morning (Jan. 25), as the RCMP are still receiving reports from residents.

“We’re going through other files to see whether or not they’re just attempts or mischiefs,” Ritchie said. “It’s a bigger problem than just those nine.

“There was at least four calls from last night to today,” he added. “We’re probably looking at a baker’s dozen right now of break and enters.”

Residents on Morrow Road began posting around 3 a.m. Friday about a man attempting to enter their homes. One said he came up their driveway with a flashlight, while another said he tried to get in through their garage.

Several community members are speculating about who could be attempting the break and enters, and have posted pictures from surveillance video in the closed Facebook group Life in Agassiz.

RCMP have not released details for any potential suspects and say they are still working on the files.

Although Friday morning’s events were largely concentrated around Morrow Road, Ritchie said break and enters have been reported across Agassiz, all the way down to Tuyttens Road and Culter Road.

Because of the incidents, RCMP are asking residents to lock their cars, as well as their sheds and garage doors.

“They’re going around, they’re finding unlocked vehicles that have remote controls for their garage doors in them,” Ritchie said. “So we need people to take their remotes out, or at least lock their vehicles.

“The most important thing is to actually remove the remote, because once they’re in your house, they’re in your house.”
