The Grand Forks Airport Appreciation Day Fly-in has been cancelled due to the increased helicopter traffic due to the wildfire activity in the area.
James Traynor, Grand Forks Flying Association president, said the club is disappointed but completely understanding of the city’s decision to cancel the show.
“The City of Grand Forks has told us that due to the helicopter traffic out there people being air side is not safe,” he said. “It’s cancelled.”
Traynor said the club will meet this week and discuss the possibility of moving the fly-in into September.
“We kind of thought it (cancellation) might happen but we hoped that things had settled down,” he said, “But more and more helicopters are coming. People being air side in and around the rotary blades doesn’t work. It’s extremely dangerous; we don’t want anyone getting hurt. I totally understand (the decision).”
The fly-in was set for Sunday.
