There’s some high-flying promotion planned for a major hockey tournament landing in Vernon.

Kelowna International Airport is providing financial support to the 2014 RBC Cup and it will ensure visitors experience a warm welcome.

“Once we know exactly when the teams will arrive, we’ll set up a special welcome area for them, and we’ll do the same for fans, officials, and Hockey Canada’s sponsors and staff,” said Jenelle Hynes, the airport’s marketing and media relations manager.

“Their first experience of the Okanagan comes when they land at YLW and we want to ensure they get a great welcome. An event like the RBC Cup makes Vernon look great and it helps the region as well because people will want to come back to see more.”

The national junior hockey championships run from May 10 to 18, 2014 at Kal Tire Place.

“We’ll ensure that our airline partners, our  volunteers, the car rental people, and everyone else in the terminal knows about the influx so we’re all prepared to greet visitors,” said Hynes.

The airport had welcomed more than one million passengers by the end of August.

“The North Okanagan generates a significant portion of the estimated 1.5 million business and leisure travellers who will arrive at and depart from YLW in 2013 so the airport is keen to support the RBC Cup,” said Hynes.
