Parents in School District 70 are invited to attend the Alberni District Teachers’ Union Rally on Tuesday, Sept. 2 (2014) at 10:15 a.m., at Hansen Hall on Johnston Road. Classes will not be starting for public school students on Tuesday.
“Government has informed BCTF that there will not be a settlement unless the BCTF agrees to give up court win on class size, support levels for student with special needs and learning specialists teachers such as teacher-librarians, learning assistance teachers as well as school counsellors,” ADTU president Ken Zydyk stated in a note circulated on social media.
“We need parent support and pressure on government to get our schools open.”
Mediator Vince Ready walked away from negotiations on the weekend, leaving the BC Teachers Federation and B.C. provincial government at an impasse over teacher contract bargaining. There is no indication when students will be going back to school.
Here are some resources for parents looking for more information on the contract dispute:
Registration has also opened for the parent support program. Parents of public school students 12 years old and under can register at http://bcparentinfo.ca/ to receive $40 per student for each day school is not in session due to the ongoing labour disruption in B.C. public schools.
