Alberni learning council launches

Collaborative solutions to the educational needs of Alberni Valley stakeholders underpin the creation of the Alberni Valley learning council

Collaborative solutions to the educational needs of Alberni Valley stakeholders underpin the creation of the Alberni Valley learning council.

North Island College regional director Andrea Baluchi gave a presentation about the initiative to Port Alberni city council at their meeting on April 14.

“It’s a chance for local stakeholders to discuss what their needs are and how we can work collectively to meet those needs,” Baluchi said. “The council can problem solve, identify resources and strengthen partnerships – it’s a win-win situation.”

Council stakeholders include college, city, business, First Nations, students and citizens. “A broad cross-section of voices can be heard about what is needed and what is offered,” she said.

Such a council isn’t new. It was spearheaded by John Bowman, who was chosen as NIC president in May 2013; he brought the idea with him from the College of New Caledonia, where he served as president and chief executive officer.

The council provides an opportunity for members to network and build relationships, something Baluchi has set as a priority since becoming regional director of NIC Port Alberni in January.

The council has already had a cursory meeting and has scheduled another for June. Membership of the council is open.

“We’re trying to get the word out and let the council grow on its own,” Baluchi said.
