Alberni man pleads guilty to sexual assault

A provincial court judge has sentenced Calvin Ross,48, to a six-month conditional sentence and three years probation for sexual assault.

A provincial court judge has given a Port Alberni man a six-month conditional sentence and three years probation for one count of sexual assault.

In Port Alberni provincial court on Thursday, Judge P. McCarthy further sentenced Calvin Ross, 48, to register as a sex offender for 10 years and submit a sample of his DNA to the federal criminal data bank.

Ross must also stay away from public parks, swimming areas, schools and community centres where persons under age 16 congregate unless accompanied by a third party.

And he can’t be employed or volunteer in a position of trust over persons under age 16, or use a computer to communicate with them.

Two other charges that Ross faced were stayed.

The offences took place in December 2011. Ross was charged shortly after and pled guilty when he made his first court appearance in January.

McCarthy declined the defense’s request for a publication ban on Ross’ name.
