Alberni Valley Lions ready for annual television auction

The Lions raise about $13,500 annually at the auction, and all that money is spent in the community.

The Alberni Valley Lion’s Club is gearing up for its annual televised auction this Saturday, Nov. 26 on Shaw Television Channel 4.

The Lions raise about $13,500 annually at the auction, and all that money is spent in the community. Money goes into bursaries, the annual school heritage fair, a seniors picnic, vision care, and food for learning programs.

The Lions Club purchased a spot scanner last year to check school children’s vision, and have a budget to spend $10,000 on vision care this year, Russ McLaughlin said.

“It screens for five different conditions and referrals go to eye doctors if necessary,” McLaughlin added.

Nearly 450 elementary school students’ eyes have been checked, and the program has expanded to high school students too.

This year the Lions have teamed with Alberni Community and Women’s Services Society (ACAWS) to help fund an educational video on victims of crime.

Items are already available for viewing on the Lions’ website at avlionsauction.com. A list of the approximately 300 items will also be published in the AV News on Thursday, Nov. 24.

Pre-bids for the auction start at 4 p.m.

The auction will be televised live on Shaw Television Channel 4 from 4:30–10:30 p.m., with approximately 45 items per hour going up for auction.

For those without Shaw TV service, live streaming via the Internet will be available starting at 4:15 p.m. on auction day, Nov. 26, at avlionsauction.com.

To call and place bids on items, phone 250-723-4421.

Those who successfully bid for items can pick them up at the Port Alberni Youth Centre, 4210 Cedarwood St. (behind Circle Dairy on 10th Avenue), starting at 9 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 27.
