Three people including a woman from Port Alberni are in hospital after a two vehicle collision near Cathedral Grove.
Emergency crews responded to an area a little more than a kilometre west of the Cathedral Grove parking lot at 11:30 a.m., RCMP Cpl. Mike Elston said.
An east-bound vehicle driven had crossed the centre line colliding head on with a west-bound vehicle, Elston said.
The 46-year old female driver of the east-bound vehicle was flown to hospital in Victoria with undetermined injuries.
The 76-year old driver of the west-bound vehicle and his 74-year old passenger, both from Qualicum, were taken to hospital in Nanaimo with non life-threatening injuries, he said.
“It appears the driver of the east-bound vehicle was distracted and she was possibly looking for something when she crossed the centre line,” Elston said. “Neither alcohol or a cellphone was involved in this.”
This is not a Cathedral Grove traffic problem, Elston said. “This is a ‘driver not paying attention’ problem, and we were very fortunate that there were no fatalities.”
