Aldergrove’s seventh “extreme home repair” got started a day early this year as a couple dozen volunteers showed up to get the project going early Thursday morning.
The annual workbee by the Acts of Kindness (AOK) outreach of Aldergrove 7th-day Adventist Church will transform the home of the Grochowski family this year.
The family of six — parents Walter and Terry, and their children Sarah, Alicine, Benjamin and Samuel — will be on holidays at an Abbotsford hotel for the next 10 days while the renovation of their home is undertaken.
“Our neighbour nominated us for this,” said mother Terry. “It’s overwhelming.”
As in previous years, the AOK team expects more than 200 volunteers and 50 corporate donors to be involved in the renovation of the two-storey home over the 10 days.
The family has lived there for the past 12 years. All of them are either working or attending high school and are looking forward to their first family vacation together in many years.
“We’re going to go (on day trips) wherever the family majority votes,” beamed father Walter.
A camera team from ForceFour Entertainment were also on hand to record the work as part of their pilot for the proposed TV series on Aldergrove and community-building.
The total makeover of the home requires that the family move out until the “big reveal” said AOK spokesman and head of the church’s family life ministries Mike Dauncey.
“We’re going to go at it as a team and get it done. We invite everyone to join us on Victoria Day, the 23rd, 5 p.m., at the home at 2881 – 267A Street, when we welcome the family back into their new home,” said Dauncey.
