A case of COVID-19 has been detected at Alexander Elementary School in Duncan.
A letter from Island Health chief medical officer Dr. Sandra Allison and School District 79 superintendent Robyn Gray was posted to the school’s Facebook page late Monday afternoon informing the school community that potential exposures may have occurred on Jan. 13, 14 and 15.
Island Health has completed contract tracing to identify any staff and students who need to self-isolate or self-monitor for symptoms.
Alexander is the first public elementary school in the Cowichan Valley where cases have been detected and announced. Previous potential exposures have happened at Chemainus Secondary, Cowichan Secondary, Quamichan School and Duncan Christian School. Duncan Christian closed for two weeks between Jan. 18 and Feb. 1, because so many staff members were affected by protocols that it is unable to operate on its usual basis.
