All open fires to be allowed in Cariboo Fire Centre starting noon, Sept. 20

People should still check other restrictions

All open fires will be allowed in the Cariboo Fire Centre starting tomorrow (Thursday), Sept. 20 at noon due to a decreased wildfire risk in the region. However, anyone lighting a Category 3 open fire must obtain a registration number ahead of time by calling 1-888-797-1717. A category 3 fires is any fire larger than two metres high by three metres wide, three or more concurrently burning piles no larger than two metres high by three metres wide, one or more burning windrows or stubble or grass burning over an area greater than 0.2 hectares.

“The BC Wildfire Service takes several factors into account before rescinding open burning prohibitions. These include balancing the needs of the public with the need to mitigate the risk of human-caused wildfires. The BC Wildfire Service has sufficient fire response resources in place in case any new wildfires start.

Category 2 fires and campfires are already allowed in the Cariboo Fire Centre. Other legislation regarding air quality, fuel breaks etc. will still be applicable.
