All runs open at Mount Washington

Ski hill operates 81 runs

All the alpine runs — including the Outback — have opened at Mount Washington, which as of Monday had a base of 172 centimetres.

Recently, the local ski hill had the fourth deepest base (173 cms) among Canadian ski resorts, according to On The Snow. Monday’s measurement puts it in 13th position. The deepest is Whistler Blackcomb.

“It’s one of those hard things for us to gauge because we do get a lot more wind loads than a lot of other resorts,” marketing manager Sheila Rivers said. “It’s looking good. We’ve had fairly consistent storms coming through, some pretty heavy storms just after we first opened, which we really did need. It was great to have those set in before the holidays…We have 81 out of 81 runs open. The only one that fluctuates usually is the Outback, based on conditions.”

The Nordic trails are also open.

During ski season, Mount Washington employs more than 800 people.

It hosts a number of events, such as the Vancouver Island Society for Adaptive Snowsports (VISAS) Festival, which runs until Thursday. The annual program offers novice lessons in downhill, snowboard or cross-country skiing to people with learning challenges.

A Kids Slopestyle competition was held Saturday.
