With a recent rash of thefts from vehicles on the books, Vernon RCMP have been proactive in making patrols of the city.
Thursday morning, members were quick to respond to a car alarm going off shortly after 4 a.m. in the 6000 block of Cummins Road in Okanagan Landing, and a report of a theft from a vehicle.
“An 18-year-old male resident of Vernon was arrested and taken into custody shortly after he was discovered in the nearby area,” said Vernon RCMP Cpl. Gerry Kovacs.
While other police units were responding to the initial call, a suspicious vehicle was observed by police fleeing the area at a high rate of speed.
Police located the vehicle abandoned and were able to determine that it had been taken earlier from a residence in the area. The police service dog unit was called out in an attempt to locate the person or persons that had fled from the vehicle but were unsuccessful.
“This complex investigation is in its infancy and police are actively investigating at this time in order to determine if these thefts are related to a series of thefts from motor vehicles that have been occurring in the city,” said Kovacs, who thanked everyone that called in to assist police.
Thursday’s incident serves as yet another reminder to remove all belongings from a vehicle as a wallet and laptop computer were taken.
“We’re also asking everyone to remain vigilant in your neighbourhoods and report all suspicious activity to police or Crime Stoppers,” said Kovacs.
