It’s open to everyone with the exception of one particular group.
Parents with young children wishing to take part in the third annual Taylor Van Diest Memorial Walk today in Armstrong should, instead, take the kids out to collect candy and goodies.
“It would break Taylor’s heart to know that the young kids were not out trick or treating,” said Van Diest’s mom, Marie. “That’s what she would want.”
Van Diest, 18, was assaulted near the Rosedale Avenue railway tracks on Halloween night, 2011. She died Nov. 1 from her injuries in Kelowna General Hospital.
Today’s walk starts at 6 p.m. at the Armstrong Spallumcheen Museum, heads up Pleasant Valley Road to Rosedale, then down Rosedale to the memorial trail named in memory of Van Diest.
Everyone is welcome to attend and are encouraged to bring candles for the walk.
“The walk is something we need to do, to acknowledge that night,” said Marie. “Taylor had such a close circle of friends who have stayed in touch with Kirstie (twin sister).
“The people I meet, I appreciate they’re willing to ask me questions on how we’re doing.”
