A frequent visitor to ex-Kitimat mayor Joanne Monaghan’s home, a bear cub, was finally caught in a trap set by the Kitimat Humane Society early on Thursday, November 14.
He was transported the same morning to Northern Lights Wildlife Sanctuary outside Smithers, home to another two grizzly cubs caught in Kitimat – Max and Morrits.
The sanctuary’s Kim Gruijs said the cub will be in a separate enclosure for the time being to make sure he isn’t ill and has had a chance to eat without having to compete for his food.
She said the sanctuary currently has two groups of bears – 21 black bears preparing to go into hibernation and five black bears who won’t hibernate until their correct weight/size ratio is established.
Gruijs appealed to homeowners to be bear-aware, keep their properties clean, garbage locked away and fruit picked to avoid bears becoming regular visitors.
The sanctuary relies solely on donations from the public – if you’d like to donate, visit the sanctuary’s website.
