The BC Food Systems Network 13th Annual Gathering will take place July 7-10 in the Valley Room behind The Lodge in 100 Mile House.

This is area residents’ opportunity to participate in two days of workshops with passionate and informed people from around the province. All the meals will feature local food, catering to the meat lovers as well as vegetarian and vegan eaters.

“The gathering has been the number 1 inspiration for me,” says Trish Chung who is active in food security issues in the community.

“It has enriched my knowledge of food from traditional and cultural perspectives to political and environmental issues.”

The gathering begins Thursday afternoon, as people arrive.

Friday morning will have the opening address and plenary about “resiliency and diversity.” Workshops will continue throughout the day, with time set aside to walk over to the South Cariboo Farmers’ Market.

On Friday evening, a special panel presentation is open to the general public. The theme is “Land Reform and Redistribution; Securing Food for Present and Future Generations,” followed by a reception, featuring organic wine and cheese. Tickets are available at the door for $25.

Saturday workshops will be offered, with an opportunity to visit Horse Lake Community Farm in a guided tour. Saturday evening will present local talent in the Martin Exeter Hall with public admission by donation.

Sunday will wrap up the weekend with a meeting of the newly elected board.

“There is a real desire to direct our efforts strategically to make the most of our energy and resources,” says Chung.

“As a grassroots organization, we believe it is important to hold this gathering to support the contribution we can all make toward a sustainable food system.”

The BC Food System Network is a grassroots organization instrumental in producing position papers, fostering the Working Group on Indigenous Food Sovereignty, sponsoring participation of members to national and international food security conferences, as well as supporting the networking of groups across the province on topics ranging from community kitchens to co-op development through website “listservs” and personal mentorship.

The cost of registration for the weekend is $295, which includes workshops, meals and camping accommodation or billeting. There is a one-day option available for $100.

To register, contact Dawn Morrison, Gathering co-ordinator BC Food Systems Network, at 250-679-1116, or check out the website at www.fooddemocracy.org.
