A request from a citizen who does his part has led the City of Armstrong to add another garbage receptacle around town.
Harvey de la Salle wrote a letter to council asking if a couple of garbage cans could be placed along Pleasant Valley Road between Bridge Street and Warner Avenue.
“As I walk around town, I notice how clean and tidy the streets and public spaces are,” wrote de la Salle.
“To do my bit, I and some others make it a habit to pick up garbage from time to time along our walking routes. I notice the main garbage areas are across from the park and across from the fairground gates.”
The city currently owns and maintains 36 garbage receptacles at various locations throughout the community, with most of them situated beside existing benches.
The receptacles are located in high traffic areas near commercial businesses, schools, transit stops parks and trails.
Public works manager Tim Perepolkin said in a report to council that the costs associated with adding additional garbage receptacles would be slightly more than $800.
“As funding is available, and the request is reasonable, staff will proceed with this installation,” said Perepolkin.
A receptacle will be added at the existing bench located at the entrance of Memorial Park on Pleasant Valley Road.
Coun. Paul Britton praised the efforts of de la Salle and his walking friends.
“He’s just caring for the community and picking up garbage along the way,” said Britton.
“(Late councillor) Betty Atkinson would be very happy and very thankful that people are picking garbage up.”
