Artist needed to brighten Five Corners wall in Chilliwack

The City of Chilliwack has put a call out in search of an artist who will create a temporary mural downtown

Calling all artists who specialize in large-scale pieces.

The City of Chilliwack is on the hunt for an artist who can create a mural to add some life to what is currently a big, blank wall at Five Corners.

“The city believes that public art helps increase the vibrancy and livability of the community, thereby fostering a sense of pride in public places,” reads the call for artists announcement.

They are thereby inviting professional artists to submit public art proposals for the creation of a temporary giant mural to be placed on a wall at Five Corners Greenspace. The western exposed exterior wall, located at 46120 Yale Rd., is 10-metres by 30-metres big.

The mural has been noted as “temporary” as the site where it will be placed is marked for development, says Carol Marleau, manager of leisure development for the city.

Preventative measures will be taken towards protecting the future mural from vandalism.

“The city will work with the artist in establishing some graffiti deterrents. What’s great is the three existing murals downtown have remained tag-free for the most part. Hopefully that trend will continue,” she adds.

All artists are eligible to apply, especially those who have experience in producing high-quality, two-dimensional, large-scale work. The deadline to submit an application is before 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 6. The budget for this project is $5,000.

The successful artist will have two weeks to complete the project. In order to be considered for the Five Corners temporary mural project, the following must be offered in the proposal:

• The artist must submit a resume outlining their experience

• The artist must submit a rendering of the proposed public art piece

• The artist must submit at least two examples of their completed work

• The artist must guarantee that all artwork submitted is original and does not violate the copyright of any other person

• The material used to produce the renderings must be able to withstand exposure to the elements

• The timeline required from start of production to completion

A selection panel comprised of project stakeholders, community members and art professionals will review all applications.

Those interested in applying can send their submissions in an envelope to: Five Corners Public Art Project, Attn: Carol Marleau, Manager of Leisure Development, City of Chilliwack, 8550 Young Rd., Chilliwack, B.C., V2P 48A. Email: Marleau@chilliwack.com, phone: 604-793-2904.
